Kinja'd!!!

2011 Cruze 6MT. I valeted it this morning. Shifter is sloppy as hell and this car is slooooow. Just finished up the interior and now it’s time to get rid of an obscene amount of swirl marks in the paint. Wish me luck.

Do you guys put any sealants or coatings on after you do this? Do customers actually take care of it afterwards or just take it back to the car wash aka swirl o matic?

Ya I’ll be using a polishing compound to cut into the clear coat abit to get rid of swirl marks. There are a few problem spots where the customer I guess backed into something so I’m going to be using a heavy duty compound to get rid of whatever deeper scratches I can. After all that I’ll throw on a sealer/wax compound to make it look all shiny haha

And yes the customers always go back into the carwash but it takes a loooong time for the swirl marks to come back.

What do you use as a polishing/rubbing compound to get rid of the swirl marks in a clear coat. I used a polishing compound to try to buff out a clear coat scratch and it just left swirl marks in the clear coat and looked worse off than when I started.

Do the guy a solid and tell him to trade the thing in after you finish your detail work. That's the best the car will ever look, and as you mentioned the shifter is already sloppy as hell. It'll only get worse.

One of these days I’m gonna have the M3 detailed to see if someone can work a miracle on the god awful paint job done to it. Just need the $300 for a full detail..

That nice but damn it sucks for them to turn around and ruin the finish. I love swirl free cars.

A polish and a compound are two different things with a compound being more abrasive/aggressive. What did you use to try to buff out the scratch? What kind of applicator? Did you use a machine?

Usually what you would do is try your least aggressive method which is usually clay then polish. If the scratch is still there try a more aggressive polish or a compound like Meguiar’s M105 followed up with a polish like Megs M205 (or Ultimate Compound then Ultimate Polish if you are at a store). What you saw was probably compound haze or marring from your applicator.

The shifter is fixable

How bad is the paint? I can do some great paint correction. I did a correction on one of my manager’s cars a few weeks ago. Black altima. Looked like living hell when I got my hands on it. Swirl mark city. Now the paint looks like new.

If you’re ever interested in a detail let me know! The detail shop where I am is literally a half mile away from the C&C location at Westport. We do paint details, interior details, a combo of both and engine cleaning/dressing. Paint details start at $175 I believe.

I used this stuff, I think it’s too abrasive. I’ll get some clay and try that.

Start with a good claying of the car. After that you can move onto to compounds to get rid of swirls. It is super helpful if you have orbital buffers.

The quality of the compound also has an effect. My opinion is try Meguiar’s ultimate polish, you can find it in most auto stores and sometimes walmart. Try to use it with a foam applicator not a terry cloth or microfiber one.

These 3 in the exact order presented should be able to get out almost anything and keep it nice:

It’s pretty bad. Surprisingly no bad swirl marks but a good amount of scratches and scuffs. Then there’s the orange peel but that’s really only fixable with a good wet sand. It really just needs to be repainted again, just properly.

Oh I’m definitely interested, just a matter of $$$. Once summer rolls around and I can get more hours at work I’ll definitely get it done.

I would like to just watch someone detail a car. Like the DRIVE Clean series. I think it’s really cool.

Haha you better have tons of patience! This detail was very clean on the inside but needed some paint work and it took about 5 hours.
